Originally settled by Passamaquoddy and Penobscot native tribes, the area gives visitors access to several different parts of the state, whether it be heading up north, the DownEast area, or south to Mount Desert Island. Following some disputes during the French and Indian Wars, Ellsworth was incorporated under the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a town in the year 1800. In the century that followed, it became an important economic center in the region, along with the city of Bangor to the north.

Today, the town sees visitors from all over the world, not so different from its historical importance as a shipping and trade center. It’s been growing in recent years, with a rising population and a booming local economy!
