Caribou

Welcome to Caribou!

“The most Northeastern city in the United States!”

Why visit Caribou? Visiting here is like going back in time to small-town America, where people are friendly and life is good.

Activities in Caribou

Caribou is not only the most northeastern city in America but the second-largest city in Aroostook County. It has many things to offer: hiking, biking, running, walking, and ATV riding are just a few local hobbies. There are also two major trailheads where you can do all of these activities: The Aroostook Valley Trail and the Bangor & Aroostook Trail. Click on the categories in the left navigation menu for more information.

Caribou is actually made up of a number of townships and plantations from over 160 years ago. Though the site was first visited in 1793, the city officially became incorporated on April 5, 1859 as Lyndon, Maine. The name was later changed. In the 1870s the city became a popular place for Swedish settlers, and in the 20th century, the area became one of the largest producers of potatoes in the world, in keeping with the spirit of Aroostook County.
