SOE Research

Consistent with UMaine’s classification as an R1 institution, research is at the heart of everything we do. SOE faculty and students publish articles in top academic journals, and we share our findings at conferences around the world.

But most important, we bring insights from our research into the classroom to add deeper insights to the topics we teach. SOE students at all levels build research skills and have opportunities to gain research experience. It’s no wonder that almost 40 percent of our graduates cite research skills on their LinkedIn profiles.

Our research goes hand-in-hand with the many outreach and service activities we conduct for the betterment of Maine and beyond. SOE faculty and students have the tools and experience to address issues facing a small business or community in Maine, as well as problems of global significance. Our research studies are deeply rooted in Economics, but we also collaborate with partners in other fields on interdisciplinary projects.

SOE’s Partnership with MAFES

Recent student projects, supported by MAFES, have examined the use of public boating facilities along Maine’s coast and the impacts of artificial intelligence on Maine’s workforce. Our work supported by MAFES is a great example of a land grant university’s three-part mission of teaching, research and community outreach.
