Dr. Jonathan Malacarne and colleagues advance research to inform new strategies for producing and marketing small grains

SOE Assistant Professor Jonathan Malacarne is working with Professor Ellen Mallory from the School of Food & Agriculture and UMaine Cooperative Extension on a USDA-funded research project designed to support new strategies for producing and marketing small grains. Drs. Mallory and Malacarne join a multi-institutional team of researchers led by Cornell University and funded by a $2 million USDA Award focused on developing infrastructure to establish markets for organic grains in the Northeast and Midwest. Dr. Malacarne is leading the economic side of the project, which involves supply chain mapping, studying the role of institutional markets in supporting a value-added organic grains economy, and identifying challenges in getting organic grains to consumers at prices they’re willing to pay. The project involves researchers from Cornell University, University of Maine, University of Vermont, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Illinois, Oregon State University and South Dakota State University, as well as agricultural stakeholders.
