Former SOE Graduate Student Muntasir Rahman Publishes Research with Assistant Professor Angela Daley and Colleague

Former SOE graduate student Muntasir Rahman, Assistant Professor Angela Daley and colleague Barry Watson recently published research in Population Health Management. They studied racial/ethnic differences in the effect of public-place bans on smoking and self-reported health. They found that public-place bans reduced smoking for some groups (e.g. Asian and Hispanic/Latinx men). However, the bans had little effect on self-reported health, except there may have been an improvement among non-smoking American Indian/Alaska Native women. These findings highlight the importance of looking beyond average effects to consider how policies affect racial/ethnic minority groups, and they suggest that a suite of policies is necessary to reduce tobacco-related disparities.
