In this talk, Dr. Terry Yoo will cover some perspectives on federal grantsmanship.  The discussion will include a hard look at what makes a promising line of research, in his case targeting combining technology and biomedicine.  This will be a personal professional approach to basic tactics for writing grant proposals including a view of the inside of NIH, and an individual vision for research.

As a long standing project officer at NIH, his views will include explaining the public information about that agency, but the perspective will include a comparison and contrast to other federal agencies.  The talk will include a view of the organization for the National Institutes of Health, a candid view of its structure and policies, and strategies for approaching the federal grant application process.

Dr. Terry Yoo is a new Associate Professor in the UMaine School of Computing and Information Science and has a part-time appointment with the Office of Research Development.  Prior to joining the faculty here, he was a 20-year member of the intramural research program at the National Institutes of Health where he served as the Head of the 3D Informatics Group in the Office of High Performance Computing and Communications at that National Library of Medicine.  He was awarded the 2013 Hubert H. Humphrey Service to America Award from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for his tireless advocacy of open science.  In 2015, he shared the Secretary’s Choice, HHS-Innovates award for his contributions in software tools for the NIH 3D Print Exchange. With a Harvard undergraduate degree in Biology and a doctorate in Computer Science from UNC-Chapel Hill, Dr. Yoo applies interactive 3D graphics, computer vision, and visualization techniques to the biomedical sciences.
