EOS interviews Brady on ocean pH in the Gulf of Maine

EOS interviewed Damian Brady, professor of marine sciences at the University of Maine, on the vulnerability of the Gulf of Maine to become more acidic from warming waters and increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. “The dynamics are such that we have these countervailing forces all the time. We have these rises in total alkalinity from offshore source water, increases in temperature, while also, we as a species increase the carbon dioxide that goes in there,” Brady said. “It’s really complex.”
