Media report on federal funding to UMaine for sustainable manufacturing center

The Portland Press Herald, News Center Maine, Spectrum News, Republican Journal, WABI-TV (CBS 5 in Bangor) and WFVX-TV (Fox 22/ABC 7 in Bangor) reported that the University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC) was one of more than a dozen Maine organizations awarded a combined $11 million in federal funding from the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) to help strengthen economic opportunity in rural communities. The ASCC will receive $1 million to help establish a new immersive manufacturing center called the Green Energy & Materials research Factory of the Future , which will house flexible manufacturing spaces with a focus on producing sustainable, bio-based materials. “This project will enable the growth of a new, innovative and sustainable form of wood residual manufacturing and the preparation of an innovation-ready Maine workforce,” said UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy.
