UMaine surveying students place third in national competition

The University of Maine student chapter of the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) placed third in the baccalaureate division of the 2024 NSPS Student Competition, held April 22-23 in Washington, D.C.

Eighteen teams completed a surveying monument hunt across the District of Columbia on the first day, followed by historical surveying field exercises and calculations around the Washington Monument on the second day.

UMaine’s team included Thatcher Unfried, Owen Tull, Peter Kelton, Max Heck, Thomas Berry and Morgan Haufler. Rich Vannozzi, an assistant professor of surveying engineering technology, is the team’s advisor and accompanied students to Washington, D.C.

“These students worked amazingly hard to prepare,” said Vannozzi. “Not only did they do very well in the technical competition, but they represented the university, the Maine College of Engineering and Computing, their school and program with honor and distinction.”

The team thanks donors from across New England who made their participation possible, including Blackstone Land Surveying, John Chagnon, Colliers Engineering & Design, Connecticut Association of Land Surveyors, Greg Copeland, Feldman Geospatial, Haley Ward Inc., Hancock Associates, Claire Kiedrowski & Rob Garster, Maine Boundary Consultants, Owen Haskell Inc., Plisga & Day Land Surveyors, Sackett & Brake Survey Inc., Sebago Technics and E. Worthington Jr., Surveyor.
