Speakers of national status in the field of civic and public life are invited to campus to deliver a lecture to the UMaine community. Senator Margaret Chase Smith has devoted her post-Senate years to engaging young people and to encouraging them to fulfill their obligations of citizenship. Senator Smith lived by what she considered to be the basic principles of American democracy: the importance of courageous and engaged leadership; the need to carefully assess government policies; the responsibility to participate; the right to criticize; and the right to independent thought. Lectures are recorded and can be watched after the initial presentation. Contact the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at um.policycenter@maine.edu or 207-581-1648 for more information.
Staples Lecture and Seminar Series in Biochemistry
The Department of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences has created the Staples Lecture and Seminar Series to bring distinguished biochemists and molecular biologists to Maine for seminars and informal discussions with students and faculty. Staples Distinguished Lecturers are usually in residence for several days to one week to present two or three research seminars and a public lecture on the visitor’s science at a level appropriate for a more general audience. Some past Staples Lecturers have taken this opportunity to discuss a topic of particular social or educational importance in which they have been involved. Seminars are scheduled on Mondays during the Fall and Spring semesters in Hitchner Hall 203, 1:30-2:30pm (unless otherwise noted). Contact the School of Molecular and Biomedical Sciences at um.MBMS@maine.edu or 207-581-2810 for more information.
