Biography

Julia Barron Luddy is a Master’s student at the University of Maine’s School of Marine Sciences, advised by Dr. Lisa Kerr of the Quantitative Fisheries Research Lab located at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) in Portland, ME. She graduated from Smith College with a BA in Biological Sciences in 2020 and received highest honors with her thesis focused on modeling the population dynamics of anadromous stream fish and their management implications when combined with climate drivers.

After completing her Bachelor’s, Julia worked as a Seasonal Resource Assistant for the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) for a few years. She also received her pre-certification for teaching 7-12th grade Biology in public schools within the State of Connecticut.

For her research at the University of Maine, Julia will be modeling the effects of climate and ecosystem drivers on winter flounder populations in preparation for the upcoming stock assessment in 2026. The ultimate goals of her research are to understand the drivers behind the continued decline of winter flounder abundance and to provide ecosystem-based recommendations to improve the sustainability and longevity of the New England groundfish industry.
