The School of Marine Sciences offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as an intensive, field-oriented, in-residence, fall-semester program for undergraduates called Semester by the Sea.  The latter program is also open to qualified students from outside UMaine. If you are not sure what you want from a marine program, or what degree to seek, you may wish to read this. If you need to locate a faculty member with knowledge about particular functions of SMS (e.g., graduate admissions), you can find them on our website under people/faculty.

Students applying for undergraduate admission are generally ranked on criteria determined outside the School of Marine Sciences at the University of Maine and in the University of Maine System, and available spaces are filled from the top-ranked students downward. All the forms you need can be reached from the Office of Undergraduate Admission’s home page. (You can get anywhere from there.) As you might guess from the checklist for students applying for first-year entry, grades, test scores and a recommendation are the primary bases of the ranking. Criteria and application materials for transfer and international students are slightly different.

We have a regular schedule of visits for prospective students and their parents. If you would like to pay a visit, are unsure and need specific or general information about the School of Marine Sciences to make your decision, or need navigational help to steer the reefs of admissions, contact:
