National Security Education Program (David L. Boren Graduate Fellowships)

The Boren Awards were established by the National Security Education Act of 1991, which created the National Security Education Board, the National Security Education Program, and a trust fund in the U.S. Treasury to provide resources for scholarships, fellowships and grants. It is guided by a mission that seeks to lead in development of the national capacity to educate U.S. citizens, understand foreign cultures, strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness, and enhance international cooperation and security. As a Boren Fellow or Scholar you will spend time abroad learning another language and experiencing the culture of your host country. The goal of the Boren Awards is to prepare American students for future careers contributing to the security of the United States. 

Benefits:

• $25,000 for 25-52 weeks (any major)
• $12,500 for 12-24 weeks (any major)
• $12,00 for summer intensive language study prior to beginning overseas program

Eligibility:

• Be a U.S. citizen
• Be planning an overseas program in a country outside of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand
• Be planning to study in a country of which they are not a citizen
• Be an undergraduate students — all years and most majors
• Be interested in studying abroad in certain countries
