Services for New International Students

The Office of International Programs (OIP) at the University of Maine offers the following services to international students:

Application Process

  • Assistance with the documentation of funding process and guidance on immigration issues.
  • Answer questions about campus housing, dining, recreation, and the local community.
  • Issuing of I-20/DS 2019 and offers guidance on visa processing.
  • Provide information and resources regarding temporary accommodations prior to orientation.
  • Registration in the University of Maine international health insurance plan.
  • Provide a local airport/bus station pick up on the arrival day.
  • Connect students with academic advisors and campus resources related to academic support.

Upon Arrival

  • On designated arrival day, an OIP representative will pick up students from Bangor airport or bus station and bring to campus.
  • Obtaining a MaineCard (Student ID Card).
  • Assistance with moving into campus housing.

Orientation

Orientation is mandatory for all incoming international students. Orientation is a 3-day event, and it includes:

  • Meeting & socializing with other international students.
  • Introduction to the International Programs staff.
  • Briefing on immigration requirements and regulations and mandatory check-in.
  • Overview of campus services and facilities including student services, student health, student counseling, campus safety and more.
  • Discussion of cultural adjustment and the US academic system.
  • Shopping event to a local grocery/department store
  • The University will also have many other orientation activities taking place during the first week of classes for ALL UMaine students. This information will be provided to students during the orientation session.

Ongoing Services

  • Staff members with immigration experience are available at all times to help students with immigration questions, concerns, getting paperwork signed for travel and relevant applications for OPT, changes in status, etc.
  • Staff members are available to assist students with questions about the University and the local community. Often we can assist students with resolving their issues, but if not, we can help them locate the appropriate office or service that can help.
  • Provides programming throughout the year to provide opportunities for friendship and cultural sharing.
  • Acts as a liaison between the student and the recruitment agency after the student’s arrival in Maine.
