Description: How have Americans defined the boundaries of slavery and freedom? This course focuses on how the relationship between slavery and politics shaped meanings of freedom between the American Revolution and Reconstruction and how these issues continue to shape our present. It examines how various historical actors defined and manipulated this relationship to advocate for themselves. It also focuses on how this history has been remembered, commemorated, erased, and distorted to serve various present-day concerns.
