Description: A survey of main themes of U.S history from 1877 to the present. The course may include an emphasis on political, social, economic, intellectual, and technological aspects of the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, WWI, the interwar era, WWII, the Cold War, and post-Cold War era.
This course examines the major developments in America’s domestic and foreign affairs from the end of Reconstruction Era to the early 21st century. Lectures, readings, and discussions will explore the efforts of a variety of “American communities” to balance the ideals of liberty and equality with the forces of economic, political, and ideological power. The class also will introduce students to the variety of interpretations, methods, and sources that historians use.
