Description: This course will survey the history of the Maine woods from post glacial times to the present. Topics include alterations in the forest ecology, Native American and colonial settlement, and changing economic, industrial, and recreational uses of the woods. The course will also explore the varieties of spiritual and literary interpretations ascribed to the forest environment.
General Education Requirement: This course satisfies the Western Cultural Tradition and the Population & the Environment requirements.
