Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do I need to know how to skate?
To join you do not need to know how to skate at all! We have members who are more than happy to help teach anyone how to skate during our ice times. We have skaters who’s ability ranges from never setting foot on the ice to those who’ve been skating their whole life! All are welcome, and encouraged to join us!
Do I need to have my own skates?
You do not need your own skates! The Alfond Arena offers rental skates to students at no charge with a MaineCard. The Figure Skating Club also currently has about 15 pairs of skates in various sizes available for use during ice time!
When do you meet and how often?
We typically meet once a week on Thursday nights at the Alfond Arena on campus around 8-9 pm, however keep an eye on our ‘Calendar of Events Page’ as our ice time shifts around frequently. We also have ice dedicated to our competition team which meets 6am-7am on Mondays. Anyone is welcome to join our competition team if they have interest in competing.
How much are dues?
Currently, our dues are $30 a semester for recreational skaters to help cover ice time and $60 for competition team skaters to help cover coaching and competition fees. Due are collected at the start of each semester.
Is there a Synchronized Skating team?
Unfortunately, we currently do not have a synchro team but we hope to have one in the future.
Do you compete or put on shows?
Yes! We started competing in the 2019-2020 season and have been competing each season since! We also hold an annual show, typically in the fall semester.
What do you do outside of skating?
When we aren’t on the ice you can find our members joining new clubs all over campus, such as Swing Dance, hanging out doing homework together in the library; as well as fundraising and volunteering throughout our community!
