Ed Grew celebrates 25 years at UMaine

Research Scientist Ed Grew is in his 25th year at UMaine, a milestone that the University will mark formally in the spring.  Ed_GrewBelow is a letter recognizing Ed’s contributions to the University:

The Department of Earth Sciences welcomes the opportunity to recognize the 25 years of service of Edward Grew to the University of Maine.  Ed is an essential member of our department’s research community, and his accomplishments have added significantly to the prestige of our Department and the University of Maine.

Ed received a B.A. degree from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. degree from Harvard University. Ed has served in post-doctoral positions at the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California at Los Angeles before joining the research faculty of the University of Maine in 1984.  His distinguished career in mineralogy and metamorphic petrology have included expeditions to India and Tajikistan and 10 field seasons in Antarctica with Research and Polar Institutes in the U.S., Japan, India, Australia, and the former Soviet Union.  This research was funded by 22 research grants and has resulted in over 130 peer-reviewed publications, several edited volumes, and numerous presentations at national and international scientific conferences.  Ed has also brought significant international recognition to the University of Maine through his discovery of 11 new minerals, one of which was discovered within the last year.

Ed has been a faithful mentor and educator to both undergraduate and graduates students within the department.  Ed has volunteered to teach courses, contributed to seminars and research group meetings, has provided research funding and has served as advisor for a graduate student and several undergraduates, and has served on advisory committees for many Masters and Ph.D. students.  He has an encyclopedic memory for mineralogy and is a trusted resource for faculty, students, and visiting scholars in the subjects of mineral chemistry and petrology.

It is surprising with Ed’s level of professional accomplishment that he finds time for anything else. Ed is also an avid birdwatcher, amateur botanist and hiker, the editor of his father’s memoirs, and, in the company of his wife Priscilla, a world traveler.

Ed Grew’s 25 years at the University of Maine have been the tremendously productive, both for Ed and for the University.
