For Graduate Students: Creating an Inclusive Syllabus

October 9 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

In-Person Training

Are you updating or creating a syllabus for a new course? Are you planning to teach and want experience with essential syllabus characteristics? Your course syllabus can be a powerful tool that can effectively establish classroom norms, performance expectations and foster student engagement. Research has shown that the tone, content and design of a course syllabus can directly affect students’ perception of instruction, the choice to pursue a subsequent major, and decision to engage with faculty outside of the classroom.

Using research and established guidelines, we will:

  • Self-assess a syllabus for components of an inclusive, engaging, and informative syllabus that supports student success.
  • Identify language and design elements that promote equity, belonging, and growth mindset.
  • Discuss strategies to help your students read and engage with the syllabus.

Attendees are asked to bring a paper copy of a syllabus to revise and annotate during the workshop.  It can be from a course you are teaching, plan to teach or are currently taking.

Space may be limited!
