Business RLEs

Incoming business students have the opportunity to participate in ONE of our two Research Learning Experiences. Please explore our options below.

Adventure

Course Info
In this course, you will explore opportunities in the outdoor recreation economy. In 2020 alone, this segment of Maine’s economy generated over $2 billion in sales. In this class, you will be introduced to all of the aspects of business necessary to create a business plan for a new company that leverages Maine’s sense of place. Small class meetings on Fridays give you time to work on your business plan with a peer discussion leader.

Bound for Business
Students who sign up for the Adventure RLE will also take part in our Bound for Business Trip. This four-day, outdoor adventure gives students an opportunity to make meaningful connections with their classmates before the fall semester begins. Our base camp will be the University of Maine’s 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond. Students will have the opportunity to go hiking, swimming, canoeing, rock climbing, and more in small groups. Students and Maine Bound student leaders will participate in meaningful positive activities that will foster community, team building, and allow for reflection. Students will move onto campus on August 23 and be bussed to Western Maine that afternoon. This adventure is led by Maine Bound, a University program that offers comprehensive outdoor experiences for students and community members of all skill levels. Visit our Bound for Business webpage for more info.

Cost
First-year Students pay no more for this enhanced experience than they would for any course with a similar number of credits, and some students will pay less. To cover the costs of the Bound for Business trip, without raising the cost for you, you will see the following two items on your bill:
• A waiver worth one credit of tuition ($388 – $1,493, depending on the type of student)
• A flat fee of $388 (regardless of the type of student)

Analytics

Intro to Blockchain
In this RLE, Students will learn about blockchain, a system of recording information in a way that makes it almost impossible to change, hack, or cheat the system. Each block in the chain contains a number of transactions, and every time a new transaction occurs on the blockchain, a record of that transaction is added to every participant’s ledger. Non-technical students will build complex smart contracts and dApps that deploy on proven blockchain platforms with an easy-to-use (SIMBA) drag-and-drop interface that automatically generates code and APIs.
