MBS Student Workers: A Career-Ready Community
The Maine Business School proudly supports student success beyond the classroom. Over the past academic year, MBS employed a record-breaking 73 students in roles designed to build professional skills and provide meaningful, real-world experience. These positions include MBS Ambassadors, Peer Leaders and Coordinators, First-Year Experience Interns, Media Team members, Student Success Center staff, Bloomberg Lab Monitors, Dean’s Office Support staff, and Research Assistants. With a diverse range of opportunities, MBS continues to prepare students for career readiness through hands-on campus employment.
“Students’ commitment and dedication to their jobs play a crucial role at MBS,” says Executive Dean Jason Harkins. “Whether collaborating with faculty, planning events, providing customer service, or executing behind-the-scenes tasks, our students work hard to shape and uphold our exceptional standards and performance.”
Each year, these opportunities become increasingly competitive. “We see a record-breaking number of applicants annually,” says Julia Van Steenberghe, Director of Student Success and Recruitment. “These are highly desirable positions, and students often stay in them for as long as they can. The roles allow students to feel better connected to our community while gaining invaluable skills like leadership, communication, and professionalism. Students also participate in regular performance reviews, preparing them even further for life after college.”
Steve Corrigan, a sophomore from Mansfield, MA, works as both an MBS Ambassador and Peer Leader. His roles require efficient communication and collaboration, skills he knows will stick for the future. “In my peer leader position, I help lead and mentor first-year students by guiding them through course content and creating a supportive, engaging space where they can grow academically and personally,” he says. “I attend lectures with them, lead weekly cohort sessions, and work closely with faculty to ensure we’re aligned on the course goals.”
Steve also shares his rewarding experience in the Ambassador program, where Team MBS connects with prospective students and sets them up for success through their first-year transition. “It’s a chance to represent something I believe in while growing as a leader and communicator,” he says. “I genuinely enjoy connecting with people, and the roles I have at the Maine Business School give me the chance to do that. Whether I’m sharing my experience, helping someone feel more at home, or learning from others, these opportunities let me grow while doing something that feels natural to me.”
Piper Kollman-Veit is a junior from Gardiner, ME, and works in the Student Success Center and the Bloomberg Lab. She enjoys the relationship aspect of working for MBS and cherishes the connections formed. “I love getting to talk to new people!” she says. “Each day it’s a different group—whether it’s students coming in for appointments, coworkers hanging out doing homework, or faculty just coming to say hi, there are always people around!” Piper shares that her roles have brought her closer to a lot of the faculty and staff. “So many different people come in, so I often get to see my professors outside of class and make connections that I wouldn’t have without this job.”
Being part of the MBS staff has made Tyler Baldwin, a non-traditional business student from Hopewell, NJ, feel valued and prioritized as a student. He works as a Teaching Assistant for Associate Dean Dr. Patti Miles. “Being a student employee has made me feel like more than a name or number on a roster,” he says. “The most enjoyable aspect of this job is being part of a team that is committed to the success of its individuals.”
Employment at MBS serves as a career launchpad for students. Through the various roles, students are building confidence, community, and connections. The skills they are learning go far beyond what they can include on their resume.
