Student Health Insurance

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP):

In response to the new federal health insurance requirements for the college-age population, the University of Maine, in collaboration with the University of Maine System, is pleased to offer an affordable Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) for 2018-19.

All non-international undergraduate students enrolled in 9 credit hours or more and graduate students enrolled in 6 credit hours or more are required to show proof of adequate health insurance coverage. An annual health insurance charge of $1,858 will be billed to eligible students in the fall semester. Students with adequate health insurance must complete an online waiver process to opt out of the plan before October 1, 2018. The coverage period is from August 1, 2018 through July 31, 2019.

For eligible students whose initial enrollment at the University begins with the Spring semester, a partial-year (Spring only) health insurance charge of $1,079 will be billed. Eligible students with adequate health insurance must complete an online waiver process to opt out of the plan before February 20, 2019. The partial year coverage period is from January 1, 2019 through July 31, 2019.  PLEASE NOTE, THE ONLINE WAIVER FOR SPRING TERM WILL BE AVAILABLE IN EARLY JANUARY, PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR INFORMATION.

To opt out after the deadlines, a manual waiver form will need to be submitted to the Bursar’s office. Please note that the approval is upon the discretion of the insurance company.  This form will be available after the online waiver process has ended.

Graduate Assistant Health Insurance:

Graduate Assistant Health Insurance is mandatory for all graduate assistants and fellows working 20 hours a week and earning a minimum monthly stipend of $1,733.33, unless proof of comparable insurance is provided. Graduate Assistants are not eligible for the SHIP plan described above. Cost of coverage is $2,845 for coverage from August 1, 2018 through July 31, 2019.  Eligible students with adequate health insurance must complete an online waiver process to opt out of the plan before October 1, 2018.

International Student Health Insurance:

International Student Health Insurance is mandatory for all international students, unless proof of insurance is provided. International students are not eligible for the SHIP plan described above. Cost of coverage is $2,845 for individual student coverage from August 1, 2018 through July 31, 2019.   International students with adequate health insurance must complete an online waiver process to opt out of the plan before October 1, 2018.
