Undergraduate Programs

Our major degree programs and minors prepare students for graduate study (M.F.A., M.A., and/or Ph.D.) and a variety of employment opportunities in the creative economy. Our graduates have careers, locally and globally, in K-12 education; academia and higher education; studio art; filmmaking; graphic design; archives, galleries, and museums; libraries; public and private arts administration; art conservation, historic preservation, and public heritage; communications; and arts criticism.

Majors

Art Education B.A.

UMaine’s Art Education offers students an integrated liberal arts program that places both theory and practice at the center of learning experiences. The program prepares students to be eligible for teaching licensure in the State of Maine. Art History B.A.

The Art History program emphasizes theory, diverse methodologies, and interdisciplinary research. Students learn valuable research skills and expand their aptitude for critical and visual thinking. The major requires 39 credits in Art History, 6 credits in Studio Art, and 6 credits in foreign language study.

The major prepares students for our media-rich and symbolic world by emphasizing the analysis and critique of visual culture. The major opens up opportunities for graduate study and prepares students for careers in related fields, including anthropology, communications, museum studies, gallery work, arts administration, arts journalism, entertainment, and studio art.

Studio Art B.A. & B.F.A.

The emphasis of the Studio program is creative work in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and digital art. Elective studio work is available in photography, graphic design, and ceramics. UMaine’s Studio Program is internationally recognized as a leader in sustainable and green initiatives and research and features modern and safe facilities.
