Instructor:  Professor Richard Judd

Time:  Wednesday, 4:00-5:50 p.m.

Course Number: 09169

Location: Stevens 310

Description:  HTY 508 is a readings seminar designed to provide a broad survey of U.S. history from Reconstruction through the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era, the New Deal, and into Postwar America.  The assigned texts and articles expose students to major sub-disciplines in the field, such as economic, cultural, diplomatic, political, labor, urban, environmental, women’s, and legal history and the history of technology.  The course has several goals: to sharpen critical reading and thinking skills; to illustrate various approaches to historiography; to provide background for a teaching field in survey-level U.S. history; and to provide students with a broader context for thesis and dissertation research.  Reading and discussion will be emphasized over writing assignments.

Prerequisites:  Graduate student standing or senior History majors only.
