Tourism’s Varying Role in Local Economies
While tourism is much larger than overnight lodging, the volume of sales at hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts and campgrounds are a good indicator of overall tourism activity. This series of maps illustrates the relative importance of tourism activity by showing the role of lodging as a percentage of total local retail sales. The maps show how the importance of tourism in local economies varies across the state and by month.
