Resources - The Current: Five-minute Resource Tips for Academic Departments

Vol. 1, Oct 2013:  Family Friendly Departments.  Did you know that family-friendly academic departments are more successful in recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty? While creating a supportive climate is an effective recruitment/retention strategy in higher education, this 5-minute presentation will underscore the many benefits of working in a family-friendly place!

Vol. 2, Nov 2013:  Letters of Recommendation. Consider the subtle impacts of your word choice in Letters of Recommendation drafted for female colleagues and students. Your choice of adjectives may reveal implicit, unexplored biases, which have a negative effect on hiring processes. This brief message provides resources that will help you examine letters you have drafted and those you receive on behalf of candidates and colleagues more thoughtfully.

Vol. 3, Nov 2013: Partner Accommodation. The University of Maine offers Partner Accommodation benefits, and assistance with employment searches for faculty spouses. Watch this 5-minute video to learn more about partner accommodation policies at UMaine, including contacts who can guide you and your spouse through the search process.

Vol. 4, Nov 2013: At UMaine, there are a number of prestigious annual faculty awards given to recognize excellence in teaching, research, and public service. But a recent study conducted at UMaine indicates that our women faculty are rarely honored with these awards, and in fact, rarely nominate their colleagues – men or women. Watch this brief video to hear more about the awards on our campus, and to find information about the nomination processes.

Vol. 5, Nov 2013:  Fostering a positive and collegial climate in departments across university campuses has been shown to positively impact faculty satisfaction and retention.  Watch this 5-minute clip to hear about a 2012 climate study at UMaine that reflects the power of the department chair in creating a respectful climate, and the importance of valuing each faculty member for their varied talents.
