WGS @ Work 3

Wednesday October 26th, noon to 1:00 in the Coe Room of the Memorial Union (pizza included!). Faith Barter (professor of English at the University of Oregon) will talk about legal form in early African American literature, which is the subject of her book project, Black Pro Se: Authorship and the Limits of Law in African American Literature. The talk focuses on Harriet Jacobs’s jurisdictional imagination, and Barter shows that Jacobs’s strategies of jurisdictional thinking are part of a larger project of Black worldmaking through innovations of legal form in antebellum African American literature. As part of our emphasis in this series on how WGS curriculum can translate into work related-experience, Barter also shares how and why her work as a lawyer was foundation for her transition to an English Ph.D. and the idea for this book project.
