Kingfield-Carrabassett Valley
Welcome to Kingfield-Carrabassett Valley!
Kingfield and Carrabassett Valley are towns in Franklin County. Carrabassett Valley is home to The Sugarloaf Mountain Resort, one of New England’s top year-round ski resorts. Sugarloaf is the largest ski area east of the Rockies. This area has many activities, including skiing, snowboarding, tubing, nordic skiing, concerts, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, slopeside lodging, terrain parks, golfing, hiking, mountain biking, moose view tours, and much more. Many of these activities are located at and near Sugarloaf Mountain. Kingfield has many shops and services, including great dining like The Orange Cat. These towns also include a ski school, Carrabassett Valley Academy, where students ski five hours a day and receive a world-class education as well. Carrabassett Valley and Kingfield attract tourists from around the US and Canada but tend to have a family atmosphere.
Early European explorers to the region first visited the area in 1805. Future governor William King purchased the site in 1807, and the town was incorporated as Kingfield in 1816.
One of the town’s early settlers was a man named Salomon Stanley; one of his twin sons went on to create the famous Stanley Steamer automobile.
By the 1950s, Sugarloaf Mountain had become a major destination for skiers across the country. It was decided that a resort would be built during this time, which became the Sugarloaf Mountain Resort.
Carrabassett Valley was incorporated as a town in 1971 from a township called Jerusalem Township, Carrabassett Plantation, or Sugarloaf Township.
