Not only can you hike, but if you happen to find yourself here in the winter, the small lake that is within the preserve’s bounds is an awesome place to go ice skating! There used to be human activity in the area, so look out for artifacts and signs of days gone by!

- Though it is a club, the golf course is open for everyone! The golf course dates back to the 1920s, and remains a way to both enjoy the sport of golf, and to appreciate the natural beauty of Castine and the surrounding areas through stunning views. Stop in and appreciate the view from each of this challenging golf course’s nine holes!

- Witherle Woods became open to the public in 1985, and has come to host 6.5 miles of trails that wind through beautiful Maine forest, encompassing centuries of history within the foliage. The area has a heavy history of battles fought during colonial and post-colonial times, evidenced by the remnants of batteries and artifacts found through archeological digs.

- Given how far back Castine’s history goes, a central hub dedicated to preserving and celebrating that past is an essential stop for anyone who loves history! A wide variety of exhibits that show off Castine’s rich history give something interesting for everyone who visits!
- Fort George Wadsworth Cove Rd, Castine, ME 04421
- While Fort Pentagoet served as a French defense asset, Fort George was build almost 150 years late in the late 18th century by Britain to protect what was then Canada from the revolutionary forces in the colonies, while establishing a new colony under the name of New Ireland. Unlike Fort Pentagoet, Fort George is much more evident by the shape of the mounded earth that formed its outer bounds.
- Fort Madison Perkins St, Castine, ME 04421
- Located just off of Perkins Street farther west than Fort Pentagoet, Fort Madison is a smaller fort that was built in the very early years of the 19th century, and was engaged in the War of 1812. The fort was captured by British forces when Castine was occupied for a short time. During this time, the fort was renamed to Fort Castine, before it was taken back by the United States. Today, little more is left than just a bit of the earthen framework that gently shows its outline.

- Though it has been called by different names over the years, Fort Pentagoet sits right on the water. This historic fort, while all but gone due to the passage of many centuries, was one of the first major defensive structures in the area. The structure was built in the 1630s, and over time has been subject to many an invasion.

- The Wilson Museum brings together artifacts and stories of humanity’s past all across the planet. The museum dates back over a century, and has been education people for generations of our shared history of not only us but the planet that we all live on. The John Perkins house is a colonial house that the museum has been involved with touring, that lets people take a step back in time to see what life was like in a coastal town during colonial times.

Lighthouses
- Dyce Head Lighthouse Dyces Head Rd, Castine, ME 04421| (207) 326-4502
- Located on the western shore of Castine, Dyce Island Lighthouse has been lighting the way for ships passing by for 200 years. The quaint lighthouse has gone through many changes over time, including being completely decommissioned and the guts of it moved to a new wooden structure nearby. The keeper’s house burned almost completely down, but was repaired and remains kept up to this day. The newer wooden lighthouse was destroyed by a storm in 2007, which led to the old stone lighthouse being recommissioned and repaired to working order.

- The Castine Baseball Fields are actually located within Fort George Park, within what was once Fort George. A fun little side activity if you want to get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air!

- Part of Castine Golf Club, the Castine Tennis Courts are open to the public and allow people of all ages to enjoy the wonderful sport of tennis. Lessons are available if you book ahead of time, and are held between the middle of June and Labor Day.
