    • Great hiking spot with moss-lined paths to coastal bogs and cobble beaches along the rocky coastline. Look for nesting bald eagles, spruce grouse, songbirds, and small mammals.
  • Cobscook Shores: “The Butler Conservation Fund has announced the opening this week of its second large-scale project to provide outdoor recreation in wild and scenic locations in Maine, known as Cobscook Shores.” “Encompassing 500 acres across a series of coastal parklands”…”a dispersed set of parks”…” The parklands are free to use and include 14 miles of scenic shorefront, 8 miles of biking and walking trails, several hand-carry boat launches, camping areas, vault toilets, screened pavilions and picnic spots.”

    • Part of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, this “1,225-acre preserve in Lubec provides people of all ages opportunities to experience a rugged coastal landscape of cobble beaches, sheer cliffs, and rocky promontories.”

    • At the peak of this mountain, there are beautiful 360-degree views of the surrounding bay and landscape. The name of the mountain originates from the story of two men in 1897 who “devised a scheme claiming that they could extract gold from the nearby seawater. These men worked as con artists who — after hiring hundreds of workers and collecting funds from investors — fled the area never to be prosecuted for their deception.”
  • Pike Lands Preserve 1099 N Lubec Rd, Lubec, ME 04652
    • “This conservation area is actually comprised of two open-access properties along the North Lubec Road— A 91 acre property owned by DCC on the south side of the road and a 30 acre easement property owned by Maine River Trails LLC. At one time the entire property was owned by esteemed naturalist Radcliffe Pike who planted an eclectic variety of horticultural plants now featured as an educational arboretum. The two properties also include a total of 1.5 miles of hiking trails which traverse a unique variety of plant, bird, and wildlife habitats as well as a sandy beach.

    • State park at the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, the only candy-striped lighthouse in the United States. There are beautiful hiking trails great for watching wildlife, and there is also a gift shop.

    • 2,800-acre Natural Area where you can explore walking trails, beaches, bogs, forest, spectacular ocean headlands, or a picnic with an ocean or lighthouse view. There are great hiking trails, a museum, and the Fireside Restaurant and the Prince Cafe. Note- you will need a passport to go here since it is in Canada!

    • “The goal of the park is to honor the brave souls that have lost their lives in the fishing industry off the waters of Washington County, Maine, and Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada.” The memorial serves as an emotional reminder to the community of all the sacrifices made by the brave fishermen.

    • Last traditional smoked-herring facility in the United States, which closed its doors in 1991. On July 15, 1993, the smokehouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It now features rotating exhibits with arts and crafts and a gift shop.

Lighthouses

  • Lubec Channel Lighthouse 44° 50′ 31″ N, 67° 58′ 36″ W, Lubec, ME 04652
    • Located about a mile offshore, this lighthouse is best viewed by boat but can also be seen at a distance from various points along the shore. It was built in 1889 to accommodate shipping from fishing industries, primarily sardines.
  • West Quoddy Head Lighthouse 973 South Lubec Rd, Lubec, ME 04652 | (207) 733-2180
    • This lighthouse was built in 1808 by the order of President Thomas Jefferson, and it is the only “candy-striped” lighthouse in the United States. They offer tours typically every Saturday during July and August, the Annual Lighthouse Celebration in July, and the second Saturday in September for Maine Open Lighthouse Day.
