HEERF II – Emergency Student Funding

The University of Maine and the University of Maine at Machias have been allocated additional emergency student funding through the federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) of 2021, also known as the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF II). The Act requires that $3.95 million dollars provide financial aid grants to students, which may be used for any component of the student’s cost of attendance or for emergency costs that arise due to coronavirus, such as tuition, food, housing, health care (including mental health care), or child care. UMaine/UMM will begin distributing HEERF II funds to eligible students starting the week of March 24, 2021.

These funds can either be paid directly to students or can be used to pay the student bill.  Eligible students should complete the HEERF II 2021 Payment Confirmation on their MaineStreet To Do List by March 31, 2021 to notify us of how they would like to receive this payment. A student’s payment preference does not impact their eligibility for these funds or the amount of funds you will receive. If the confirmation is not completed by this date, funds will be sent directly to you.

Eligibility is determined as of March 24, 2021.

Distribution of Funds

UMaine/UMM will distribute HEERF II funds directly to degree-seeking, undergraduate and graduate students based on the number of credit hours a student is taking during Spring 2021.

Award amounts for each student will first be determined by their education career (undergraduate or graduate) and enrollment level (full-time, half-time, less than half time). Level of need (high, medium, low) will then be evaluated to determine an additional award amount.

How you will receive your payment

Once the HEERF II 2021 Payment Confirmation on your MaineStreet To Do List is completed, or if incomplete, after March 31, 2021, eligible students will receive payments through their MaineStreet Student Account.  Depending on the option chosen, funds will either be used to pay the bill or will be refunded directly to you.

If students have already enrolled in direct deposit through the Bursar’s Office, the payment will automatically be deposited into their bank account. If the student is not able to enroll in direct deposit, a paper check will be mailed to the billing address listed on their MaineStreet account.

Visit umaine.edu/bursar/directdeposit for instructions on how to enroll in direct deposit.

Visit umaine.edu/bursar/refundaddress for instructions on how to add or modify the refund address.
