- Peer Mentoring Having a person to check in with on a regular basis can be tremendously helpful. Peer Mentors are fellow UMaine students who have first-hand knowledge of what it is like to be a student at UMaine, and who have been trained to help their mentees be more academically successful. TRIO SSS participants who request Peer Mentoring typically meet weekly with their mentors one-on-one to talk about their successes, setbacks, goals, and challenges as they navigate their college experience. A Peer Mentor can help you improve your study skills with a wide variety of techniques and strategies to get better organized, improve time management, and otherwise develop skills to earn better grades and to be more successful at UMaine.
- Individual Tutoring Our primary goal is to help you succeed in your classes and earn your degree. Your advisor will help you connect with existing resources and tutoring services on campus, but sometimes tutoring is not available in a particular course, support in a course is limited, or one-on-one tutoring is more appropriate for your needs. In those instances, TRIO SSS may be able to provide tutoring for that particular course. Students who receive individualized tutoring typically meet with a tutor twice per week to clarify course material and develop strategies for success in the class.
- Supplemental Academic Advising
- TRIO SSS Advisors do not take the place of your academic advisor, however, they can help answer questions about registration, and academics.
- Budget and Financial Education
- TRIO SSS Advisors can help answer questions and refer you to campus resources to answer any questions you may have.
- Scholarship Information
- Your TRIO SSS advisor can help give some direction on scholarships. We also co-sponsor an annual Scholarship Fair to connect all UMaine students with community resources each April.
- Financial Aid Counseling
- Trio SSS hosts FAFSA workshops each Fall and Spring to assist students. Individual TRIO SSS Advisors can also help answer questions about financial aid, or connect you with campus resources.
