Capital Markets Training Lab

Gerard Cassidy ’80, an alumni of the Maine Business School, provided the means to create a state-of-the-art financial education lab for students to utilize. This lab has become indispensable to SPIFFY members, who are able to learn how to use the terminals and gather detailed and broad security and market information. Students are also able to become Bloomberg Certified after completing the Bloomberg Market Concepts training, making them appealing candidates for financial employment. The Capital Markets Training Lab is located in DPC 113.

“[The lab] will help us teach business at a truly world-class level and demonstrates our commitment to revitalizing the state.” – Ivan Manev

“I hope that this new laboratory will bring a Wall Street environment to UMaine students and that they might benefit from exposure to a part of the business world they might not otherwise experience.” – Gerard Cassidy.

Bloomberg Terminal

Within the Capital Markets Training Lab, there are four Bloomberg Terminals. SPIFFY members use this professional database to conduct research, educate themselves, and manage the portfolio. The Bloomberg Terminal is one of the most widely used tools, and one of the most sought-after skills in the financial workforce.

G.A.M.E. Forum

Each spring, SPIFFY travels to the Quinnipiac Global Asset Management Education conference in New York City. This is an opportunity for group members to meet with students at other student run investment funds across the country, network with financial professionals, and learn from experienced presenters in areas across the financial spectrum.

Past members have gone on to successful careers at companies such as State Street, Fidelity Investments, Bain Capital, Nomura Securities International, Pinnacle Trust, The Beacon Group, TD Bank, Vigilant Wealth Management, IDEXX, and many more.
