A student run investment fund worth over $3.2 million

Where students gain real-world experience in investing, apply classroom knowledge, & make important financial management decisions.

The Student Portfolio Investment Fund was established by the University of Maine Foundation in 1993 with an initial $200,000 contribution.  Today, SPIFFY manages $3.2 million in stocks, bonds and international funds. Students are able to hold various positions who make investment and organizational decisions. The executive board overlooks group structure and the portfolio as a whole, while sector heads and analysts monitor their securities and keep sectors healthy by pitching to buy or sell stocks. The skills students gain from SPIFFY are invaluable: Leadership, financial knowledge, teamwork, Bloomberg Terminal adequacy, investment strategy, and how to operate within an organization.
