Other scholarships

Scholarships are a major source of funding for UMaine students to supplement federal, state, and university aid. Awards are based on a variety of criteria that may include academic merit, achievement, alumni affiliation, financial need, or a combination of several factors.

Selective Scholarships

All Selective Scholarships are available on ScholarshipUniverse. Complete the Matching Questions in Scholarship Universe to identify which selective scholarships you may be eligible to apply for.

Selective Scholarships are donor funded, and the criteria for the scholarships are established by the donors. Students must complete an application for each selective scholarship they wish to be considered for, and must file their FAFSA each year if financial need is a scholarship criteria (look for the * by the scholarship title).

You do not need to fill out an application after the first year you are awarded the scholarship if you continue to meet the criteria; we will keep your application on file. We encourage all students applying for a selective scholarship to fill out a Scholarship Information Release Form so that the donors know where their money is going.

Department Scholarships

Scholarships are available from some University colleges and departments. Sign in to ScholarshipUniverse to see which college and department scholarships you may be eligible for and to submit and manage your application.

Outside Scholarships

Outside scholarships are often awarded through high school guidance offices, community organizations, or businesses and corporations.

Students are required to report outside scholarships to our office. Please submit a copy of all outside scholarship award letters via Secure Upload.

ScholarshipUniverse, a scholarship-matching platform, can connect you with thousands of outside/private scholarships. External scholarships from sources outside of the University of Maine are vetted before being listed in ScholarshipUniverse.

Donor Release

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the right to privacy and confidentiality of student records. The University of Maine makes every effort to protect students’ privacy. Scholarship donors appreciate knowing the students who directly benefit from their scholarship funds.

By allowing the University to release your name, directory and academic information, you are helping us to connect donors with our students. This simple act helps to ensure that more UMaine students will continue to benefit from these generous gifts.

The University of Maine depends on the generosity of our scholarship donors. Many donors appreciate hearing directly from the students who benefit from their scholarships. This communication helps donors understand the positive impact of their generosity. As a result, we ask all scholarship recipients to write a letter of appreciation upon request.

We would also like to share this information with the offices and organizations that work hard to raise scholarship funds for UMaine students and for publicity releases. Your cooperation with the efforts of the Alumni Association and the University of Maine Foundation fundraising will help to increase the funds available to assist current and future UMaine students with their education.
