SCIS Common Use Labs / CS Help Lab

Student working in computer labThe SCIS Common Use Labs are inclusive labs available for both research and learning on the first floor of Boardman Hall. They are not typically scheduled for classes. In these labs Computer Science and New Media students may come with laptop computers to work on individual class projects, work on group projects, obtain tutoring help, check out equipment, do informal exam reviews with others, use labs as study halls, and similar activities. Students may use the labs anytime they have access to them including evenings and weekends. Do you need help with an assignment, want to work around others in the department, or want to connect with other SCIS students? Stop in at Boardman 138.

Boardman Learning Lab and Lounge is a supportive space supported by The School of Computing And Information Science. It supported through assistance from lab undergraduate seniors, graduate teaching assistants, TA’s, and faculty. The Boardman Lab consists of different computers, monitors, printers, and poster plotter. The space is often used to work individually or in larger groups from intro to more advanced class courses. General tutoring for students from learning assistants are a for available for first and second year COS courses.

The CS Help Lab offers assistance, a place to work with large monitors, and a working atmosphere.

In-person Support from TAs and Lab Monitors

Support provided by lab monitors and TAs (teaching assistants), who often have gone through the exact courses most students need help with.

Office Hours

Many TAs (Teaching Assistants) and MLAs (Maine Learning Assistants) from department courses hold office hours in the Boardman 138 lab. This is a great place to ask questions, get clarification, and debug problems.

Large Table Space and Articulating Monitors

Each workspace has articulated monitors for students to connect to and use. Need a larger workspace on your computer, stop by and hook up.

Poster Printing

Computer Science Majors can take advantage of posting printing opportunities for research posters and other approved presentations. Contact Chris Dufour for more information about poster printing.

Meet fellow students! Work with students in the classes you’re taking. Study groups can meet in the nearby study lounge. Connecting with classmates is a great way to build a support network for classes!
