How long does this program take?

The MST program is designed to take 2 years to complete for full-time students – see sample programs of study from actual students below.  If students are making good progress towards their degree, they will be supported by assistantships beyond 2 years if necessary.

Track: Initial Teacher Certification
Concentration: Generalist (primary interest in life sciences)

Fall Semester #1

  • SMT 504 – Integrated Approaches in Earth Sciences Education II (3 credits)
  • SMT 505 – Integrated Approaches in Mathematics Education I (3 credits)
  • SMT 588 – Seminar in Science and Mathematics Education Research (1 credit)
  • SMT 699 – Graduate Thesis/Research (2 credits)
  • ASSISTANTSHIP: Teaching Assistantship for Biology 100 (Basic Biology).  Taught 3 lab sections for the semester.

Spring Semester #1

  • SMT 500 – Educational Psychology with Applications to Science and Mathematics Teaching and Learning (3 credits)
  • SMT 507 – Integrated Approaches in Biology Education (3 credits)
  • SMT 506 – Integrated Approaches in Mathematics Education II (3 credits)
  • NOTE: Teaching Assistantship for Biology 208 (Anatomy & Physiology). Taught 3 lab sections for the semester.

Summer Semester #1

  • EDS 521 – Statistical Methods in Education I (3 credits)
  • SED 500 – Adapting Instruction for Students with Disabilities (3 credits)
  • ASSISTANTSHIP: Research Assistantship for the the Maine STEM Partnership at the RiSE Center– worked with the teachers in residence program

Fall Semester #2

  • SMT 503 – Integrated Approaches in Earth Sciences Education I (3 credits)
  • EHD 573 – Statistical Methods in Education I (3 Credits)
  • SMT 699 – Graduate Thesis/Research (4 credits)
  • ASSISTANTSHIP: Research Assistantship with the RiSE Center– was a teaching partner in 2 middle school earth science classes

Spring Semester #2

  • SMT 590 – Seminar for Teaching Interns (1 credit)
  • SMT 591 – Secondary Student Teaching (5 credits)
  • ASSISTANTSHIP: Teaching Assistantship for Biology 208 (Anatomy & Physiology).  Taught 1 lab section for the semester.  NOTE: Students are only expected to work 10 hours/week on an assistantship during the student teaching semester*.

*NSF Fellows can choose to start their fellowship in the last year of their MST to cover their stipend during student teaching.
