Jackson Laboratory Research Internships for Teachers

Come hear about an opportunity of a lifetime!

Monday, September 20, 2010
3:00 – 4:00 pm
Room 114 Bennett Hall

Each spring The Jackson Laboratory and the University of Maine RiSE Center jointly offer a one-semester full-time research internship for MST students and practicing teachers.  For the entire semester interns work 30-40 hours in one of the research labs at TJL on a single research project that they and their mentor scientist identify together. Interns read background literature, write a research proposal, conduct the research, and summarize and present findings orally and in a written research paper. They also participate in a 3-credit MST course (SMT 507) at TJL that explores pedagogical strategies that help students learn to think independently and scientifically.  As part of the course, MST interns develop a five-day inquiry-based lesson, which they subsequently pilot in a local science or mathematics classroom.

You do not need a background in biology to be an intern — many interns have had backgrounds in physics, math, Earth science, chemistry, (as well as biology) and worked on research projects involving statistics, optics, and computation, as well as developmental biology, cancer, tissue healing, diseases, and genome projects.  Housing is available in Bar Harbor, next to the Lab.

Come next Monday and hear about JAX Internship experiences and consider the opportunity for Spring 2011.  It’s a great way to gain experience as a full-time scientist in a highly supportive environment.
