Mawlid al-Nabi (Islam)

Commemorates the birthday of the prophet Muhammad on 12 Rabi' al-awwal. Not universally observed. Begins in the evening of October 7th in 2022.

Lailat al Miraj (Islam)

Commemorates Prophet Muhammad’s nighttime journey from Mecca to Jerusalem where he ascended to heaven, was purified, and given the instruction for Muslims to pray 5 times daily. Begins at sundown on the previous Gregorian calendar day.

Ramadan (Islam)

Month of fasting to commemorate first revelation of the Qur’an to Muhammad. * Not work restricted but involves daylight fasting, so work accommodations may be called for.

Lailat al-Qadr (Islam)

The night when the Quran was first sent down from Heaven to the world and also the night when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the prophet Muhammad. Begins at sundown on the previous Gregorian calendar day.

Eid al-Fitr* (Islam)

Marks the end of Ramadan. Begins on April 21st on the Gregorian calendar at sundown. * Work restricted.

Eid al-Adha* (Islam)

The Festival of Sacrifice remembers Abraham’s devotion in offering his son as a sacrifice. Begins at sundown on the first day. * Work is restricted.

Muharram (Islam)

Begins at sundown on the previous Gregorian calendar day.

Ashura* (Islam)

For Shias, a commemoration of the martyrdom of Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, at Karbala. Begins at sundown on the previous Gregorian calendar day.
