Margaret Chase Smith Center for Public Policy
The Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center is a non-partisan research and public service unit of the University of Maine. The Center is dedicated to promoting and improving the quality of public dialog and policy, and applies its substantial knowledge in collaborative efforts that seek innovative solutions to pressing problems at the state, regional, and national level. The PDC has worked with the MCSPC on projects to reduce dependence on petroleum, support economic growth in Maine’s rural communities, and to design products using life cycle analyses that improve environmental impacts. Some of our collaborations include projects to develop a bioplastics industry in Maine, commercialize an improved cellulose insulation product that is mold and fire resistant, and to create biomass fuels from new energy crops in Maine.
