Sustainable Packaging Initiative

The Sustainable Packaging Initiative (SPI) at the University of Maine helps companies move toward circular, sustainable packaging with solutions rooted in science and industry collaboration.

For more than 35 years, the Process Development Center (PDC) has partnered with industry to solve real challenges. The SPI builds on that legacy to deliver targeted R&D and testing to help companies develop the next generation of sustainable solutions.

RECYCLABILITY

With Kiefel and Gralex thermoforming systems, UMaine helps companies trial feedstocks and scale molded fiber packaging solutions. Guided by professional staff with 50+ years of combined industry experience, the program establishes standards for performance and end-of-life.

The PDC has been actively engaged in developing a new, lab-based method for repulpability. This work program advances that effort by focusing on recyclability, engaging a wide variety of stakeholders and coordinating with other industry initiatives.
