Boardwalk Update – 11 July 2014

The Boardwalk will open on July 24th. It has taken many volunteers working over 1,000 person-hours since March to make it happen. University of Maine President Susan Hunter will be our honorary opener in a brief ceremony starting at noon on July 24th.

Our next big event after the opening is the Bangor Paint Out & Auction on August 16th sponsored by the Bangor Art Society. The Orono Bog Boardwalk campaign will be receiving 25% of the auction proceeds. Please visit The Bangor Art Society for more information and mark your calendars for this special event.

Finally, some of you may be aware that Bill Glanz, professor of Biology at the University of Maine, recently passed away. Bill was a strong supporter of the Orono Bog Boardwalk. He helped build the Boardwalk and from 2004 to 2013 during the first weekend in May he led (or co-led) a very popular morning migratory bird walk in the Rolland F. Perry City Forest and on the Boardwalk. In honor of Bill we want to collect funds ($1,000+) so that we can sponsor a new Boardwalk section (or sections) in his name. The new section(s) will be put in next year during Phase 2 of the Boardwalk reconstruction. Contributions in Bill’s memory can be sent to the University of Maine Foundation with “Bog campaign – Glanz” on the memo line. The Foundation’s address is: Two Alumni Place, Orono, ME 04469-5792.

Thanks and hope to see you all at the Boardwalk at noon on July 24th.
