BDN interviews Schattman on water storage for farms
The Bangor Daily News interviewed Rachel Schattman, an assistant professor of sustainable agriculture at the University of Maine School of Food and Agriculture, on water storage and supply designs for Maine farms during drought. Schattman has led tests for several years on the safety of using water from shallow wells as an option for storage and supply. She said most farmers don’t have the storage capacity to handle wet springs and dry summers, a climate trend that is predicted to continue, because they haven’t needed it. Shallow wells, if found safe to use, are an affordable way for farms to catch up on needed infrastructure and remain profitable.
