Victor Ostman: Outstanding Graduating International Student

Victor Ostman of Danderyd, Sweden is the Outstanding Graduating International Student in the Maine Business School. He is double-majoring in business administration in finance and in sport management, and is a member of the Men’s Ice Hockey team. Before joining UMaine in 2020, Ostman played in the U.S. Hockey League for the Chicago Steel. As a student, he has welcomed the opportunity to gain an education while devoting his time to UMaine’s top-competing DI team. Ostman has received several weekly and monthly honorable mentions as a goaltender, as well as having been named a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the nation’s top goaltender. In his third season with the team, he was also named the Hockey East Second Team All-Star. Ostman plans to play ice hockey professionally for as long as he is able, then work in sports or finance.

Why did you choose to come to UMaine?
It has a great business school and by joining the Men’s Hockey Team, I was given a lot of opportunities. UMaine has made it possible for me to pursue a business degree while playing DI hockey for one of the best college teams in the country.

How would you describe the academic atmosphere at UMaine?
I love the academic atmosphere at UMaine. The professors are very dedicated and helpful, and the students are very driven.

Beyond academics, what extracurricular activities have occupied your time?
I devoted all my time outside of classes to bettering myself as a hockey player and contributing to the team. I have received honorable mentions as a goaltender, was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award and was named the Hockey East Second Team All-Star one year.

Have you worked closely with a mentor, professor or role model who made your time at UMaine better, and if so, how?
David Townsend, professor of oceanography, has been a mentor for me in his role as a professor but also as someone who has closely followed the hockey team. He has been a great resource for me if I ever needed help with school or other related issues.

Describe UMaine in one word and explain.
Welcoming. I love how welcoming everybody has been at UMaine since my first day. People have always made me feel at home, which means a lot to me as an international student.

What are your plans for after you graduate?
After I graduate, I plan on playing hockey professionally for as long as I can. After that, I would like to work within sports or finance.
