Porter, Ozturk speak to BDN about growths on potatoes

The Bangor Daily News interviewed Gregory Porter, professor of crop ecology and management at the University of Maine, and Kutay Ozturk, potato pathologist at University of Maine Cooperative Extension, about lenticels on potatoes. “The tubers have adapted to grow below the ground where there is less air available. When the soil gets saturated there is less [oxygen] and more water, and the common response from the potatoes is that the lenticels will enlarge,” Porter said. “I would recommend not storing these tubers for too long and consume them quickly,” Ozturk said. Potato News Today and WGME-TV (Channel 13 in Portland) shared the BDN report.
