Maine Monitor discusses browntail moth outbreak with Dill, Mech

The Maine Monitor discussed the outlook for browntail moth in Maine in 2022 with Jim Dill, a pest management specialist at University of Maine Cooperative Extension, and Angela Mech, a University of Maine assistant professor of forest entomology whose research has focused on controlling the moth. Dill said that climate change is a factor in the spread of the browntail moth across Maine. Mech calls the moth a “trifecta pest,” as it damages trees, impacts the economy and affects human health. “Browntail moth is unique in that it’s all three that are being affected, which makes it quite the little beast,” Mech said. The Times Record, the Boothbay Register and the Bangor Daily News shared the Maine Monitor story.
