WABI reports on students’ fundraiser for indigenous-led nonprofit

WABI (Channel 5) reported students in the University of Maine Art Education Community Outreach (UMAECO) program are raising funds to support Gedakina, an indigenous-led nonprofit. The students have designed original imagery and printed it on T-shirts, which will be sold within the local community for $15 each. Gedakina’s mission is to strengthen and revitalize the cultural knowledge and identity of Native American youth, women and families from across New England. The students told WABI they hope their art helps deliver the message. “I think that art is essential to life, and so the more that we can get it into the community, the more we can have people get involved in artistic projects, I think life is better,” said student Rochelle Lawrence. Proceeds will support two of the nonprofit’s programs which help teach traditional life-ways and promote indigenous food systems.
