Yahoo quotes Blackstone in report on Harvey Weinstein harassment allegations
Amy Blackstone, a sociology professor at the University of Maine, spoke with Yahoo for an article about a recent New York Times story that detailed decades of sexual harassment accusations against Hollywood film producer Harvey Weinstein. “This seems like the classic case where a man of great power is using that power to intimidate women,” according to Blackstone, who has expertise in workplace harassment. Why such scenarios continue to play out is a difficult question to answer, she said, but an even harder question to answer is “How can we change it?” Wondering what leads to unbreakable silence in such a toxic culture of sexual harassment is natural, according to experts. But calling it complicit, or believing it’s the root of the problem, is “absolutely unfair,” Blackstone said.
