Mound Desert Island Biological Laboratory is a critical partner with UMaine and the IoM. Investigators from MDIBL make up a significant portion of the recent COBRE submission. One of the COBRE’s junior project leaders (Romain Madelaine) is a faculty at MDIBL, a highly recognized senior faculty (Iain Drummond) is an associate director of the COBRE administrative core, and current and past directors of MDIBL are part of the COBRE mentoring core. Furthermore, the Light Microscopy Facility at MDIBL is an important component of one of the COBRE’s major research cores.
UMaine is an integral part of NIH INBRE, a state program coordinated by MDIBL. I sit on the steering committee for INBRE, which fosters research fellowships for the state’s undergraduate institutions as well as graduate programs at UMaine and Jackson Lab. Dr. Haller and I meet on a scheduled basis to discuss joint shared research interests between UMaine and MDIBL. We hold annual research retreats with MDIBL and faculty engage in joint research projects. The interaction with MDIBL facilitates our research in biomedical science due to their strong international reputation.
